Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, in this discipline the hands and feet are used for fighting, although the sport is most famous for its spectacular kicking techniques. It translates as "the way (do) of the foot (tae) and of the fist (kwon)". The practitioners of this martial art are called "taekwondoists" or "taekwon-doin". Taekwondo, which has its origins in a longtradition, was officially born on April 11, 1955, after a long work of unification of the various schools of Korean martial arts. However, it was not until 1973 that the Korean government recognized the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and that the first world championships were organized. In addition, this martial art was part of the Olympic programs of 1988 and 1992 as a demonstration sport. It became an official Olympic sport for the Sydney Games in 2000. During these Games, 103 athletes (55 men and 48 women) from 51 countries took part in Taekwondo competitions.
TaeKwonDo first appeared in Algeria in the early 1980s
Taekwondo is moreover only considered as a style of Karate
During his practice, the taekwondoist will work on various kicking techniques (circular, whipped, turned, jumped, etc.) which he will combine to perform sequences. The exercises include hitting rackets. These are targets that allow you to work on the responsiveness, precision and impact of strikes. If Taekwondo is famous for kicking, it does not neglect the techniques of the upper limbs. Indeed, mastery of punches, elbows, attacks with the edge of the hand and blocking is acquired through kibon. They correspond to the repetition of these different movements taken individually or in combination. Learning the techniques will also involve working with the pooms. These are codified forms like the katas of Karate. They are 17 in number: 8 taegeug poomsés and 9 higher poomsés. As they practice, and until obtaining the black belt, the taekwondoist will study poomed taegeug. From 1st dan, he will work on higher pooms which are technically more difficult.
Taekwondo being a Korean martial art, the lexicon used for the commands and to designate the parts of the body, the positions and the techniques is in Korean. It is learned as the taekwondoist progresses.
In training, taekwondoists wear a dobok, which literally means "garment" (bok) of the "path" (do). The pants and the jacket are white. The collar of the latter is white for the colored belts and black for the black belts. More colorful outfits are sometimes worn for technical competitions.
Learn more about Taekwondo equipmentThe progress of the practitioner is symbolized by a colored belt. For children, 8 belts identify their level: white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, red, red and black. For adults, 5 belts: white, yellow, blue, red, black. From the black belt, the levels are marked by in, from the 1st to the 9th.
Taekwondo draws its values from the history of Korea and particularly from Hwarangdo. The hwarang were educated on the model of learned, wise and strong warriors. They were therefore equally well trained in the arts of war (unarmed combat, archery, strategy), as in literature, science, dance and Buddhism.
In Taekwondo, there are combat competitions and technical competitions. In combat, the competitors are equipped with several protections which make it possible to guarantee their physical integrity, even in the event of K.-O. : helmet, breastplate, shell, forearm, shins, mittens, pitaines, mouthguards. Kicks are allowed in the chest and head, but punches are only allowed in the chest. The number of points gained by the fighters depends on the techniques used (single kick or return) as well as the affected areas (bust or head) .The winner is the one who has won the most points at the end of the fight, who usually takes place in 3 rounds. For those over 16, it is also possible to win the fight by knocking out. his opponent. Taekwondo combat has been an Olympic discipline since the Sydney Games in 2000.
The most common technical competitions are the poomsé competitions. They must be carried out with impact, balance and technical accuracy. Pooms can be done alone or in a team. Synchronization then becomes an important evaluation criterion. It is also possible to perform freestyle pooms which give pride of place to jumping kicks and acrobatics. Finally, there are other technical competitions that may feature jump kicks, breakage or scripted fights.
For all competitions, athletes must present
